This post comes to us by the am/pm boss himself, Mr. Chris Liebing. Chris has always stood for solid Techno. A bit deeper on the spectrum side though. While his DJ sets are full tilt, they are sonic journeys between darkness and light. And, as always, far from the beaten tracks of the musical mainstream. From humble beginnings in Giessen Germany, Chris has gone to spread his sound and smile to adoring fans around the world many times over. Chris started out playing a mix of genres but the underground beckoned. He opened up his first venue in 1994 called "SpinClub" to express those feelings and also played at the legendary Omen club in Frankfurt in the mid to late 90's. He ran a few notable record labels, "Audio" and "CLR" and pure remix label "CLRetry". Chris produced weekly Internet radio shows that were heard across Europe and also produced music along side Andre Walter as "Stigmata", Speedy J as Collabs 3000 and a few others along the way. His current podcast "am/pm" is a re-brand of his previous CLR series which purely focus's on him rather then spotlighting other artists but still puts forward great music and live sets weekly.

This night, SHURE Needles had Bill and I come out to record Chris's set and mic the crowd using some of SHURES equipment as it was going to be aired on XM Satellite radio. This was also a night that Shure was hosting a "Toys 4 Tots" event along side Smartbar where Bag End Sound had brought out some speakers to set up for the show that night. Chicago's own CZR and Alex Peace opened up the night and really brought the vibe. Part of their set is up on our Mixcloud page if you want to check it out HERE. I think this might have also been the first time Chris played Smartbar as well. I know that he had played at raves in Chicago before because I remember seeing his name on flyers around this time.

Chris was using Final Scratch at this time which later became Traktor Scratch and was only the third DJ we knew of up until then that was using or even had it. The only other two were of course Richie Hawtin and John Acquaviva. They had a big part in the ongoing development and spreading the word as it went public. I think I remember hearing that Hawtin asked Chris to be a Beta tester or something to that effect and that's how he got involved with using it. You can see an early version of that set up in the first picture up above. He also had a Red Sounds FM Cyloops sampler, the white device next to the turntable, that he used to loop samples and have a bit more freedom when mixing tracks both in and out of each other and create some cool effects.

As the set starts, you hear Alex Peace get on the mic and get the crowd going as Chris's first record begins to play. This set was recorded during Chris's Hi-Octane "Schranz" phase, a phrase and style he has long since left behind. It basically was the name he gave to the type of music he was playing around this time. Hard hitting, dirty, gritty Techno. Not to different from what he's doing now, Chris has admitted, but a bit slowed downed. Chris went on to play about an hour and 45 minutes of unrelenting music to close the night out. Looping in and out of tracks, letting them flow freely throughout the mix. With the crowd not knowing when one started or the other ended. Chris definitely had the crowd eating out of his hand by time the night was over and enjoyed every minute of it!

We decided to only post an hour of the direct mix as to keep it special. I've done some searches online and haven't seen anything on this set so we're glad we can share it, the story behind it and some pictures from the night with you all here now. This was also another show that I have never seen the flyer for so if anyone has it, please feel free to hit us up so we could add it to the post.

Hope you enjoy it as much as we all did that night!

It's been awhile but after a few delays we're back with a bang to start a new year! Over the break I had time to reflect on what Bill and I have posted and realized that this year marks our tenth anniversary of our blog. So with that we'd like to thank everyone who's supported us over the years. The venues we've recorded at. The people we've worked with and finally the DJs that have let us capture these moments. Because like I've said, if it wasn't for them, none of these posts would have been possible.

When I started to look at which material to work on I thought I would go with a classic by a person who's not only helped in making some of what we've recorded over the years possible. But also one of the coolest persons you'll ever met. The "Definitive" man himself, Mr. John Acquaviva.

We've had the opportunity to record John almost every time he's played in Chicago (I've posted three so far minus this one if you're new to the blog) And with so many great sets to pick from I thought I'd pick one of my all time favorites from a club that we've recorded at dozens of times. John Acquaviva Live at SmartBar Chicago, 05-05-2000. This set has been on rotation one way or another going on 19 years now! It really speaks to the great track selection, build up and flow that John has truly mastered over his lengthy career as a DJ but the story doesn't end there.

This was during a period when John was headlining at various clubs and playing at underground events in and around the city at the same time. If I'm not mistaken, John held a residency at Smartbar a short time after this for a few years. This was also a time when artists where getting booked both at major venues and underground events in general. Speaking of that, the "Vibeonauts" logo on the lower left hand side of the flyer was the talent buyer for Smartbar at the time and was also hosting underground events around Chicago where John would be booked to play at. To me this was a special time in the city as you would experience artists in different atmospheres or venues play to different crowds so their sets would represent that and you'd really get to hear their range as an artist.

This was also another one of those shows that until recently that we had either recorded or attended over the years that I had never seen a flyer for until recently. Frequently the way it worked was Bill or promoters would call up and say "want to tag along or "so and so is in town and we want or they want to get recorded" so a lot of the time we wouldn't see what the full line up for the night was or even what show it is till we got there so I'm glad I was able to add it to this post.

The night started off with us meeting over at Bills studio for dinner and to catch up on things for a bit before the show. Afterwards, I left to get ready while Bill and John went on to record, and the Datman went on to later master, Johns highly successful "From Saturday To Sunday" double CD series using my Technics 1200's and Johns Vestex mixer that he brought with him. Since Bill was recording Johns set at the club, I didn't need to arrive as early I usually did, when the club was still closed to set up my recording equipment. When I walked in, the room was full of grooving people as Chicago local Darrell Woodson was opening up the night. He was really building up a great set and was just about to hand over the decks to John for the night.

As you can hear, when John took over, he starts off with some funky drum tracks then moves on to a few vocal cuts before he peaks this set with some really driving tunes and a mash up of the The Polices "The world is running down". This set is originally around three hours long but I decided to only post the first hour and a half as it really sums up the vibe of the night. Funky, soulful house with some dark, noisy techno. Some of the tracks that John played here were also featured on his "Saturday to Sunday" mix and were staples in his sets for a while around this time.

As far as I can tell, this will be the first time that this set has ever been released and I'm glad we can share it, the flyer, the track list and the story behind with you all now. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have all these years.

"OH YES...OH YES!"

This set comes to us by a man who been involved with the English dance scene since the 1970's starting off with Disco, rare groove and Hip Hop then moving on to House and Techno in the 1980's. He's been nominated and won more awards, been at the top of more favorite DJ's and best DJ lists. Was voted 5th place as the best DJ ever in 2011 and was crowned "The King Of Dance music" in 2015 by English Dance Music Magazine "MixMag". He's traveled the world and performed at countless festivals and events, even headlining two New Years Eve parties during the Millennium, Australia and Hawaii, crossing over the International time zone line in the process. He also started the highly respected Intec Records label back in 1999 which is now called Intec Digital. And if being a pioneering figure in Dance Music and still on top of his game after 30 years of DJ'ing wasn't enough, he also enjoys being an Daredevil on the Motorway racing Motorbikes. Loving the sport so much he formed Carl Cox Motor Sport back in 2012. He just ended his "Music is Revolution" night at the legendary Space Ibiza that ran for Fifteen years which sadly ended this past October 2016 when the club also closed it's doors for the final time after 25 years on the island, where he was also a resident. Carl also performed at the clubs closing party the same week as his "Revolution" closing party where he went on to play for 10 hours. That man being the original three deck wizard himself, Mr. Carl Cox.
This set was originally was going to kick off 2017 for us on our blog but after hearing in January of 2017 that Carl would be ending his popular "Global Radio" show which ran for an amazing 15 years that reached an astounding 25 million FM listeners across 60 terrestrial FM satellite and DAB stations through out 35 countries and countless streams online, I though it best to wait till after his show had ended to post it. Carl has had many renowned artists play on "Global Radio" over the years but he saved it's final episode, which air'd on February 24th, 2017 for himself. It featured a heart felt farewell and an emotional mix by the big man himself. Going off of the replies and comments afterwards, his fans are supportive of his decision but also voiced that both he and his show and will truly be missed to those that tuned in and enjoyed his shows over all those years.
This set took place during Crobar Chicago's ninth anniversary celebration event back in 2002. Carl was also on tour for his "Global" CD that came out around the same time. I recorded this set during the brief time I was working for the Electronic Dance Music TV show "After Hours TV" here in Chicago. The crew had interviewed Carl in his hotel room before the show with plans to air that along with some of the footage from the night on the show. The way it worked was the editors would use the audio from the nights that I would record audio and mix it over the live video footage from the club and have that finished work be the episodes that would air on the show. Carl's episode did air on TV and for awhile was available online but, to the best of my knowledge, those files have been long removed from the internet. I never got a copy of that episode nor did I get a chance to record the episode when it aired on TV so sadly, that part of this night is just a memory.
In the beginning of this set you hear Crobar Chicago resident DJ Psycho Bitch get the crowd pumped up ahead of Carl taking over the decks from her. She and other Crobar resident Teri Bristol opened up that night for Carl and really brought the energy to start off the night. As you can tell from the picture up above, there were three turntables set up that Carl went on to destroy. You can also see CD players in the picture but I can't remember if he used them during his set. Carl brought down the crowd for a bit then proceeded to pull out all the stops and really took the energy in the room and brought to the next level and kept it there till the end of the night. This set truly shows an master at work as he plays doubles, weaves in and out of tracks with out missing a beat all to the crowds enjoyment. I've originaly mastered this set to double CD from the DAT's I recorded that night and during the time I was working on this post and remastering the set, to save them as MP3's to upload on Mixcloud, I listened to it on headphones and I never realized how much the crowd was recorded in the background by the needles. It really gives an feel for the energy the crowd had that night. To best of my knowledge, this whole set has never been released before now and we're glad we're able to share it and the story behind the night with you here after all these years!

If there were ever a post that we feel fully embraces our mission and mixes that we felt needed to be shared it would be these by Chicago's own "Gemini", Spencer Kincey. Spencer was a part of Chicago's second wave of artists that came out of the 90's loft and underground scene and by many accounts was both an master on the decks and in the studio. With timeless releases on labels such as Relief, Caujal, Peacefrog, Planet e and Classic to this day still finding new fans and then what was becoming an steady flow of DJ gigs around the city and trips overseas, it all seamed to have all faded with out reason and had many asking the same question. "What happened to Spencer Kency"?

Back in 2009 when I really started to embrace the whole social media thing, I started seeing posts making the rounds from blogs, music sites and fans all wondering the same thing. "What did ever happened to Spencer Kincy and where has he been all of these years"? Being that other Chicago artists such as Derrick Carter, Mark Farina and DJ Sneak that also came out of the same era had gone on to spread their sound around the world still to this day, this had many asking why wasn't Kincey part of all this as well? From what I can put together from various sites and comments online is that sometime around the early 2000's, he disappeared altogether from both the industry and from those who knew him personally. There are a few different theory's behind why or how this all came about and the most recent info that I've seen by Chicago's (5 Magazine) sheds some light on the subject. Along with those questions came an renewed interest in his productions and mixes by younger fans that would hear what was being being posted by Kenceys fans on various websites and fan pages. That's when I started to wonder what sets of his I could find online being that the internet was now full of classic and never before released mixes from days gone by from both fans and artists that have held on to them. Surely people have dug out their old mixtapes and shared what they have of his or could point to someone or somewhere that did. Well for the most part the end result was the same handful of sets that have already been passed around for sometime now with a few getting put out over and over. That's when I started to wonder if there were any tapes in our collections that might have been forgotten about or maybe since we didn't know about how much his fans around the world missed him.
Fast forward to 2013 when we dove into the vaults and found these 6 live recordings mixed in with the lot. I had talked to The Datman about what I was reading online about Spencer and he to was shocked with what I had told him. He felt just as strong as I did about putting these out and telling the story's behind them the best we could and share his magic behind the decks. Fast forward a year to 2014 and here we are ready to share with those who are willing to listen and breath life back onto these tapes that had been sitting for all is time. We will, to the best of our abilities, try and tell some of the story from these nights but with so many recordings over the years going back to the early 90's sometimes our memories fail us. So in the end we might just let the mixes talk for themselfs and keep the story's brief. Please, if any of you have flyers from any of these dates listed, message us on here or hit us up on our Facebook page. We would love to be able to add them to the post. The 4 from 1997 were recorded at Shelter and the two from 1998 were recorded at Karma, both in Chicago. I'll spread out the the mixes over time so don't expect them to be posted all at once. So lets get into it then!
Going by the feel and flow of this recording, the first 45 minutes or so is Spencer and then Carter closes out the rest of the mix. If they went back to back on parts later on the mix or if it's just Carter on his own, we're really not sure. None the less, it's a great classic set to start with. This was around the time when Fridays were "Material" nights at Shelter and you had residents such as Scott Song, Josh Werner, Miles Maeda and DJ Diz along with local guests such as Derrick Carter, Mark Farina, Spencer Kincy among others laying down tunes and setting a great vibe that Friday nights at Shelter were known for. This is also where a young DJ Collette helped night life mainstay Erick Urenn promote the night. Material had a 6 year run till the club finally closed it's doors in 1998.
This is another mix of Spencers that was recorded by the "Datman" at Shelter Night Club here in Chicago. As you can tell from the date, it was on the Fourth of July. What better way to celebrate then with Spencer on the decks! If my search online is correct, this show was on a Monday night. We don't have the flyer from the night so it's hard to say who else played this night with Spencer. To me this mix truly shows Spencers talent for both his mixing and track selection. The "Datman" really captured something special when he recorded these nights at Shelter, especially these sets by Spencer and we're glad to be able to share this one with you all now!
I've been busy the past few months with non blog related recordings, mastering and archiving projects lately so I have'nt had time to work on new posts with our archived music for awhile now. After posting a picture of this mix tape cover on my other media sites and seeing how much interest it received, I thought I'd be cool to share this classic mix on the blog to hold you over till I can get caught up with my other projects. Also since he's playing here in Chicago this weekend, I thought I'd be a good throwback post for the site. Hope you enjoy it!
Be sure to check out Adam X as he plays Smartbar Chicago on March 25th, 2016.
On September 18th 2015, we were fortunate to have been able to record the return of Dave Angel to the Midwest as he played an two hour set at Primary Night Club in Chicago. It's been a long time since Dave graced the decks here, I'd say at least a good ten years since he played at a club, even longer at an underground event, so the excitement for the night had been building up for awhile. Opening for the night was Primary Night Club owner Derek Specs and resident Frankie Vega with Dave closing out the night.
We've been very fortunate over the past 20 years to have been able to record some great sets from a wide array of artists both local and international in origin and witness some unforgettable nights while at it. Over those years we've collected a number of first's like an artist playing in Chicago or the U.S. for the first time or the first time a venue was used for a underground event. Along the way we've also recorded a few final or last nights at a club or venue before they closed their doors for good. This post is from the latter and it's by an great artist that we can also call a friend at the closing of a Detroit institution. John Acquaviva live at "The Last Dance" Motor Detroit 6 year anniversary and club closing party.

This is another set from the archives that I've been meaning to post for awhile now but kept getting pushed back for one reason or another. That changed when over the summer of 2015 I read a piece by Michaelangelo Matos on Redbull Music Academy's site named "Nightclubbing: An oral history of Detroit's Motor". In it he spoke to those involved with the clubs success and gave some of it's history. But more recently after attending one of the "Chicago vs Detroit" Boiler Room streams that took place here, I thought it was time to finally put the set and the story behind the night out. Recording this set came about from an long relationship that we've had with John over the years. We've been recording his sets here in Chicago since 1999 and have made multiple trips to Detroit to record him at Motor during that time as well. John had talked about us coming up to record this show a few weeks prior during one of his well attended residency nights at Smartbar in Chicago where he would regularly play seven to eight hour sets. Being that the The Datman couldn't make the trip, I went and recorded the night myself.

Being that I was going to be heading up to Detroit alone, I opted to fly then make the drive by myself. As I arrived at the club, there was a huge line waiting to get in and, from what I had heard, it was filled passed its capacity. As I entered and made my way to the DJ booth, there was defiantly a buzz in the air as the crowd in attendance were up for a memorable night as was I. Not only was it Motor's six year Anniversary and it's closing party but it was also Paxahau.com's four year Anniversary party in the lounge. It featured many of it's residents such as Derek Plaslaiko and ReXXX, twelve in total, playing on four decks. Finally in the back room, Mike "Agent X" Clark and recent Boiler Room "Chicago vs Detroit" stream artist Minx rounded out an already stacked lineup for the night. As the night went on, I made my way around the club and saw Motor regular Richie Hawtin in attendance hanging out in the booth enjoying the music and taking in the moment.

This mix was a celebration of the music and sets that John had played over the years at Motor. As you can tell from the setlist below, it's was an journey filled with great music along the way. But not only did he have a some great memories at the club but has deep roots in the city as a whole as well. Between the various club, party and New Year eve events he's done, running his own Definitive record label and Plus 8 Records along side Richie Hawtin, John has had a great love for the city as has the city for him. As far as this night goes, the energy in the club was intense. John fed off the crowd as they took in every track that he played, clapping and singing along the way. Especially when "All Night Long" and his encore with "One More Time" came on. As special as this set is, the real gem here is the final ten minutes or so of the recording. I usually let the tape roll (I was still recording with the DAT Recorder then) past the last track of the night just in case someone would get on the mic to say a few words. With the night being what it was, I knew someone would here.
After the music stops you hear head of operations Dan Sordyl get on the mic and thank everyone in attendance. In the background you can hear John saying "One more song", "One More Song"! I'm not sure if they let him or he just put it on but Daft Punks "One More Time" as his encore to a cheering crowd. Afterwards Dan gets back on and says a few more words then Acquaviva takes the mic and thanks Dan and Detroit for everything. I believe Motor Booker Jon Ozias gets on and gives a bit of the history on how the club started and mentioned those involved with its success over the years. Mike "Agent x" Clark gets on and says some words as did Derek Plaslaiko before I stopped recording<span style="color: #141823; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">. It was a somber mood as the lights went on all around. The crowd didn't want to leave as everyone there knew it was the end of a era for Detroit and wanted to take in as much as they could. From what I've seen or should I say not seen, this will be the first time that this set has been posted anywhere. John did however want me to send copies soon after the night to someone who wanted to play the set at their wedding reception. That must have been one hell of a party!

He's created timeless tracks both as an solo artist and while part of such pioneering groups like PHUTURE and Pierre's Phantasy Club. The former of which created a whole new genre of music, Acid House, while at it. Introduced the likes of Felix The Housecat and J.R. Jordan to the world and pushed new production methods such as his still popular "WildPitch" style. He influenced the East Coast Disco-House faze in the 1990's while at New York's Strictly Rhythm records as their in house producer and also had a brief stint as A&R for the label. He's been globetrotting for over 20 years, DJing for 30 and from the looks of his every growing DJ dates and reuniting as PHUTURE with original member DJ Spank Spank, he's not ready to throw in the towel just yet. This set was recorded during the Chicago Foundations: "Heroes of House" whole building event that took place at Metro - Smartbar in Chicago on April 17th 2015. It featured a fantastic line-up of artists who all got their start in Chicago and have gone on to take their sound around the world since. Upstairs in the Metro, DJ Diz and J-Dub opened up for Derrick Carter, DJ Sneak and Mark Farina who all performed on 2 mixers and 6 CD players for almost 6 hours. While downstairs in Smartbar, Michael Serafini and Garrett David went back to back opening up for DJ Pierre and DJ Spank Spank's first live performance in Chicago as PHUTURE since their much talked about "House Music Legacy Session" Boiler Room stream back in early 2014. Then DJ Pierre went on to close out the night for the last two hours with this spectacular DJ set.
I must say, the energy this night was through the roof! This event had Chicago and the Mid-West buzzing after it was announced with some in attendance making the trip from out of state just to catch it. Any of these artists fill a club on their own, but having them playing at the same night in the same venue in their home town was truly one show that was not to be missed. It felt like a family reunion of sorts with all the familiar faces in attendance that I would see back during the 1990's rave scene here. A few of which don't make it out to shows anymore but could't let this one pass them by. I also saw many Chicago artists like DJ Hyperactive, DJ Heather and Andrew Emil out showing their support and making their way between both venues during the night.
Down stairs in Smartbar, Serafini and David built the room up nicely for over three hours before PHUTURE's took over with a live set. When they did, Pierre and Spank Spank feed off each other and the crowd as they went through some of their classics and newer tracks for about an hour. Mid way through their set, newest studio member Lothario Lee jumped in and tweaked on some gear before their set ended with "We Are PHUTURE", which had the crowd chanting along with them. When it was time for DJ Pierre to close the night out, he went on to lay down what had to be one of the most vibrant and energetic sets I've ever heard him play. He weaved from classic's to newer gems and really took the crowd on a journey. There were a few moments during his set where everyone in the booth and on the floor were yelling, screaming and jumping up and down. Afterwards he went on the say, "I never play like that! I kept pushing and the crowd wanted more!" As you can hear from this recording, he showed Chicago why even after thirty years of DJing, he's still a master at his craft.
This post is the second part of the "AIRA House" Originators Series that took place back on January 30th here in Chicago. The first post (which can be viewed here: "AIRA House" Panel) covered Roland's "AIRA Crew" (artist reps and technicians) as they spoke to Chicago artists and pioneers Jesse Saunders, DJ Hyperactive, Roy Davis JR and Gene Hunt as they asked them about their own certain styles and history in Dance Music. They also discussed what drove their pioneering spirt, experimental attitudes and what motivates them today. The night also featured a live set by Thirdwave (AKA Poorboy Rich and Casey Bishop) who used Rolands new AIRA equipment during their performance.

Not only were we able to bring you the video that got recored that night but we were also fortunate enough to have been able to record the sets from the event afterwards and are excited to be able to share them with you now. We're going to post them in the order that the artists played and they go to show just why, along with their production talent, they got chosen to do the "Chicago Originators" leg during this series tour. I hope to post a new set a week so check back for them as time goes by.

This post is a very special one as it's on someone whom if it were not for the crafting of his sound specifically to the crowd here in Chicago, and those whom he inspired that went on and created their own music, there might not be this music we call "House" today. But sadly it's also falls on the first anniversary of his untimely death. The Godfather of House music, Frankie Knuckles.

On March 31th, 2014, the world received the news of his sudden passing and it's left a void in the Dance Music community here and around the world ever since. Many thought as I did that it was a cruel April fools joke being that the news started to make it's way around online the evening before April First. As time passed friends close to Knuckles as did various Social Media sites confirmed that his death was in fact true. In a email released to the press by Fredrick Dunson, a long time friend and business partner of Knuckles, he stated that Knuckles had died at his home in Chicago of then unknown causes but later it was revealed that he had succumb to complications due to Type II Diabetes. Knuckles had developed the decease in the mid 2000's and has battled with it ever since.

Knuckles has had countless production and remix credits to his name and a list of artists that he's worked with over the years that included Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and Luther Vandross just to name a few. He's travel'd the world over all while touching people with his spiritual sets and warm heart along the way. And if it were not for fellow DJ and friend Larry Lavan turning down an opportunity to be the resident at a club that mutual friend Robert Williams was opening here back in the the late 70's, Chicago and Dance Music as a whole, might be in a different place then it is now or maybe not even be in existence.
This mix, which was also mastered by Live Sets Chicago's own "The Datman" at the time, was given out at D/E Entrainment and Tabernacle Chicago's event of the same name back in 2000. The two production companies put on events at various venues such as The House Of Blues and Crobar over the years which featured Knuckles as the DJ for the night. The event was held at The House Of Blues main room and from what I remember the DJ booth was set-up in one of the balconies off to the right so that left the main stage free for people to dance on which they did this night. This was one of many events that Knuckles performed at that we had the privilege of attending and memories do sometimes seam to blend together. But a few do stand out from this night in particular that I'd like to share.

At one point during the night I found myself dancing next to a large group of people and what looked like a bodyguard in front of them. As the night went on I found out it was then rising pop star Christina Aguilera and her entourage that were in attendance. Aguilera, who was on tour around that time, was enjoying the music as her security stood watch. The other was during the end of the night as I went up to the booth I heard a fan with an Italian accent asking Knuckles if he could sign a empty champagne bootle for him to take as a souvenir. Knuckles told him "They're never going to let you take that out of here"! The fan just laughed as Knuckles signed it. The fan proceeded to stuff the bottle down his pants and walked away as everyone in attendance stood there and laughed as Frankie just shook his head.

I would say that "Escapade Chicago" is a mix of hope, inspiration and determination. With lyrics such as "They can't take that away from me", "Don't you ever give up" and "Brighter days are just around the bend" it's hard not to feel motivated after listening to it. As how many felt after experiencing one of Knuckles energetic and spiritual sets. As with other mixes on our site, we try and share lost, classic of forgotten mixes or ones that have a story behind them that we feel need or should to be told. And in this case pay tribute to someone's who's brought countless others joy and happiness in their lives and spread House Music around the world. But sadly it's also a reminder of how his sound is and will be missed by those experienced his sets or listened to his music.

Since we started writing this post, there have been a few announcements that involve Frankie's legacy that we wanted to include. First there was a foundation created in his name called The Frankie Knuckles Foundation. The foundations's primary goal is to preserve and keep the musical legacy of Kunckles alive through media, events, conversation, artistic endeavors and eduction. The foundations site is still in the works but a donate page is linked on the address above. On the anniversary of his death, there were two events that took place in Chicago. One celebrating his life, the other looking to tell it on the big screen. First there was a Boiler Room event at Smartbar Chicago. Knuckles had performed at the venue for over the past 32 years and from what we understand, was the first resident DJ the club ever had. This event was the only official International tribute to the late artist as approved by The Frankie Knuckle Foundation and his estate. The event featured Chicago DJs Elbert Philips, Alan King, Michael Serafini and Derrick Carter. All of which had an intimate and intractable connection with Knuckles over the years and are great artists in there own right. Lastly there was a production kick off party for "The Warehouse". A movie in the works recounting the story behind Chicago's "Warehouse Club" where Knuckles started his career here in the late 1970's and where "House Music" got it's name. It will also tell his legacy behind the decks and will go into detail about his relationship with long time friend Robert Williams, who originally asked Knuckles to move here from New York to DJ at the famed Chicago after-hour night club.
This is a bit different from what we normally post but we're just as excited to be able to share it. Live Sets Chicago teamed up with Chicago's Energy Productions to bring you the Chicago leg of Roland's "AIRA House" Originators Series Artist Panel discussion at The Primary Nightclub from this past January. This series brings together Roland's "AIRA Crew" (artist reps and technicians) as they speak to the host cities artists in a panel style setting and asks them about their certain styles and history in Dance Music. They discuss what drove their pioneering spirt, experimental attitudes and how classic Roland production instruments like the TR-909 and TB-303 shaped what and how they produce'd and shaped Dance Music as a whole.

This panel featured Chicago's pioneers, producers and DJ's Jesse Saunders, DJ Hyperactive, Roy Davis JR, and Gene Hunt. Everyone gave their backgrounds, histories and how they're using Rolands new equipment both in their studios and or while performing live. Those in attendance were also able to try out the new "AIRA" line of equipment that's bringing classic Roland production equipment like the TB-303 and TR-909 to a new generation and as they say that can either break artists free from computers and software based music programs as stand alone pieces or integrate them with what they already have in the studio or let their creativty be spontaneous during live performances.

There were also many fellow Chicago DJ's and producer's in attendance during the panel and that had stayed for the event after the panel such as Wyndell long, Vincent Floyd, DJ Mazi, Frankie Vega, Rees Urban, Lothario Lee, Charles Matlock, Rob Threezy, Herb J, Phil Free Art, MircoDot and DJ He Man IS. The panel went over an hour and it wasn't nearly long enough to really get in depth on everything but from what I hear, Roland might be considering doing other events here in Chicago with different hands-on workshops and longer in-depth sessions with different artists and producers since this one had such positive feedback afterwards.
This post took longer than expected but I still wanted to share my experience from this great night because I felt some of the reviews I saw making the rounds left out some details that I think needed to be included. It was hard not to get excited when the word got out about the back to back events that were taking place on the 25th and 26th of February in Chicago. Video streaming site the "Boiler Room" along with Mid-West veteran production crew "House Preservation Society" put together what many have said to be the most anticipated and what Wednesdays event went on to be the most watched live stream the site has done to date. The buzz surrounding these two shows were not only due to the fact that Boiler Room was finally doing a proper dance music stream here but also because of who was billed to play at both of these nights. The first stream held on Tuesday (Which I didn't attend) was an "Dance Maina" records label night with some of it's heavy hitters manning the decks such as Robert Armani, Jammin Gerald, DJ Gant-man and DJ Deeon.

As much of a buzz as that event created before, during and after, it all lead up to Wednesday's "House music legacy" stream that had fans waiting by their digital devises for the live feed to begin. That night featured acid house creators "Phuture" reunited with original members "DJ Pierre"" and Earl "DJ Spank Spank" Smith and newest member "Lothario Lee" performing live. The excitement behind this set was due to the fact that Pierre and Spanky would be reunited and at the controls of those little silver boxes that put them at the head of the pack and had countless people emulate their sound for years to come. There was some talk during the stream and when the video went online that this was not the first time the duo had performed together in 20 years as some had stated. As the story goes, Pierre had moved to New York in the early 1990's to pursue a brief stink as A&R at Strictly Rhythm records and started working on productions for other artists when his solo career began to blossom. Things began to drift apart with being in the group with Smith and the duo stopped producing all together as Phuture in 1992. Pierre still supported the group and signed a few releases while working at Strictly when Smith continued on as Phuture under a few different plays on the name and with different members over the years but never again with Pierre. The most recent being "PHuture 303" with Rio. That duo had performed live last year at Chicago's Metro venue and as "Phuture"with Pierre at Paris's Rex club. But this will truly be the first time that Pierre and Smith would be performing as Phuture in Chicago with a whole new live show in almost 25 years. As an added bonus, vocalist and original Pierre's "Phantasy club" singer "J.R. Jordan" also performed with the group getting the crowd going singing a version of his and other Chicago great Felix The Housecats classic track "Fantasy girl" who was also produced by Pierre back in 1987. Phuture also had support from fellow Chicago talent Angel Alanis who was seen off to the right of the trio during their set. Angel had helped the trio work on sync'ing all their equipment together and with their live show.

As far as the rest of the line up went, I heard a few people say that it was all DJ's you could catch playing in Chicago at one time or another but to me it was the perfect mix of style, skill and diversity to have at an event like this to really show what Chicago artists are all about and what some out there may been missing out on. You had Strictly Jazz Unit member and Cajual recordings artist "Glenn Underground" who many have said had the best set of the night. Multi talented and production king with over 200 E.P's under his belt "Paul Johnson". Detroit hero now living in Chicago of Inner city and solo artist fame and one of the founding fathers of Techno "Kevin Saunderson" who went back to back with his son "Dantiez Saunderson" who's now following in his footsteps. And Ron Hardy protege Mr. "Gene Hunt" who started off the night and had the vibe going from the time they opened the doors. As a added bonus and surprise, "Roy Davis Jr". who was a last minute add to the lineup performed and closed out the night and also had back to back Boiler Room streams with a set the floowing week in London.

I was fortunate enough to have been able to come down to the venue before the night started and saw first hand how these live video streams worked and got to met with a few of the artists before they opened the doors. I arrived at "Primary night Club" in Chicago's Gold coast neighborhood around 4pm and preceded to walk in not knowing what to expect. This was the first time I had been to Primary for an event and I must say I was impressed with the lay out and general feel of the club. The crew from Boiler Room were still running cables, setting up cameras and getting things together as well were the staff of the club. Walking around and talking to people already in attendance, there was just as much excitement from those setting up as there was from those who were waiting online to watch And from those who got emails about making the RSVP list to get in. A rep from Roland was also there handing off the new AIRA line of production gear for Phuture to use during their set and taking pictures. This was the first time the group were getting their hands on the equipment and using them so they were getting a crash corse on some of the features. So some of what they did towards the end of their live set was totally live and on the fly.

When the doors finally opened, it was an family reunion of sorts with many Chicago artists and contributors to the music scene and friends of the artists making their way around the club. Some of those in attendance that I saw were DJ Hyperactive, DJ Skull, Boo Williams, Robert Armani, Mark Almaria, Bucky Fargo, DJ Metal X, Rees Urban, DJ Gant-Man and Tim Baker to name a few. I also had the honor of meeting Robert Williams for the first time. Williams, Owned the legendary Warehouse in Chicago where he introduced The Godfather of house, the late "Frankie Knuckles" to Chicago and where some say the term "House music"originated from. And the Music Box where "Ron Hardy" took the art to a whole new level. Also in attendance was Cajual recording artist, vocalist and DJ Rousoull who was MC'ing the night along with one of "House Preservation Society's" founding members Davey Dave who also had mic duties on Tuesday's stream. I also heard that they interviewed the artists for a documentary of sorts. Getting the story's behind the music and history from those who were there and involved. I believe these sessions will become available sometime later on their website and no doubt will get as many views as the streams. When they do I'll make sure to add them here and share them with you.

As from what many of you who tuned in live that night saw unfold and for those who will hear on these audio streams, It was a night to remember and I feel sparked a fire that will burn for a long time to come both here in Chicago and around the world. It's rumored that the Boiler Room crew are in talks to do a regular stream from here in the future and I hope they do. If the comments, audience feedback and excitement from these two streams alone are anything to go by, they might have struck gold with the talent that us in the windy city already know are worth more than their weight in it.
Originally from California before moving to Chicago, Roy was turned on to house music by greats DJ Pierre, Farley "Jackmaster" Funk, Marshall Jefferson and Lil' Louis. He then took that love and started DJ'ing while still in his early teens. Later on he began producing as he calls it "Soul Electronica". A blend of Garage, Disco, R&B, House, Soul, Hip Hop and Electronic music. Things really got moving in 1993 when he was asked to do A&R for Strictly Rhythm while still in college. Roy has released many great singles and albums during his vast career both as a solo artist and as a member of a group on label's such as Soul electric, Defected, Strictly Rhythm, Ubiquity, XL, Peacefrog, DJAX, and his own Redcat Records. Some of his stand out group productions were 1992's "Rise from your grave" with "PHuture" along side Earl "Spanky" Smith. 1996's "Times Fade" with "PHuture the next Generation" along side Chicago's DJ Skull and 1999's "Watch them come" while part of "Men from the Nile" with Jay Juniel. As far as collaborations go, You can't forget 1996's timeless "Gabriel" with Peven Everett laying down both the vocals and trumpet on the track. Many have credited "Gabriel" with kick starting the UK Garage scene when it came out and still holds it own to this day. Roy has also had Billboard chart success with hits for Eric Benet / Faith Evens, Mary J. Blidge, Seal, Patty LaBelle, Terry Dexter, Christina Milian and Morcheeba to name a few. With a steady stream of his own and production work for other artists and steady gigs all over the world, It's safe to say we will be seeing and hearing from Roy for a long time to come.
This set took place during the time I was recording audio for the Club and DJ TV show I was a part of here in Chicago. The guys from the show would call me up and have me come down to where they were filming and record the sets. This night they filmed and interviewed Roy for an episode that I think aired after it got finished but as far as I can tell it's not up anywhere online. Going off of who ever was talking on the mic during the night, this was an event called "Silly Rabbit 5" on a Friday night. The place was rammed packed with people (as you can tell from the photo's) and the vibe was very heavy and music was, well you can tell from the recording great! At one point during Roy's set a women in the packed DJ booth got on the mic and started singing along with Roy and Peven's classic "Gabriel". As it turns out, Some one left the mic on during his set and on certain parts of the mix you hear the crowd yelling (mostly me. Ha!) and cheering in the background, especially towards the end of the night when he was really bringing it. The crowd noise isn't enough to take away from the recording but it does adds some character to it.
With an career spanning 25 years, how could one not go on and on about what France's Laurent Garnier has done or more like hasn't! In England when house music hit and being one of the first to play it at legendary clubs like The Hacienda in Manchester, Laurent has gone on to become one of the worlds most well rounded D. J.'s. and producers there is. Returning back to France in the early 90's to full fill his military duty, He took this new sound and spread it across Europe spinning at raves and warehouses but he didn't stop there. Laurent went on to releasing his own productions like classics "Acid Eiffel" as "Choice from Paris", "Crispy Bacon", and the club stormer "The man with the red face" to name a few. Along with these classic's he has many solid DJ compilations under his belt like the 5 disc "Excess Luggage" mix that sums up a master at work no mater what the music. Not being content with just producing dance tracks, Laurent has gone on to compose for cinema, television and theater as well. In the early 90's he went from spinning behind the decks to talking behind the mic on various radio shows and after falling in love with this in 2003 he started his own web-radio station "Pedro's Broadcasting Basement". Then two years ago started his syndicated show "It is what it is" where this set was originally broadcasted on. In 2010 he toured briefly with Benjamin Rippert and Scan X as "LBS" or "Live Booth Sessions" performing a hybrid of live house, techno, jazz, experimental and D.J'ing. 25 years in dance music is a milestone not many have been able to accomplish yet alone think of but Laurent has and by the sounds of this mix, looks to be able to take on 25 more!
Being able to record this set came about by chance. The duel openers this night were former Smartbar musical director Nate Manic, With this being his last night before moving on to other ventures, and Chicago's own DJ Sassmouth. I had sent Nate a message about recording their sets as an thank you for all the support and help over the past three and a half years that he has given myself and the "Datman" while working at the club. A few days later and to my amazement Laurents people had contacted him about recording his set to use on his radio show "It is what it is". I was floored with this news and told him I would come down and record the whole night. I've been trying to see Laurent since the 90's but for some reason it never seamed to work out until now. Either the shows would end early, not even start and from what he told me that night, Miss a live show he did a few years back here in Chicago. Even on a trip to Europe 13 years ago I missed him by a week at the legendary venue "The Rex club" in his home of Paris France. This mix is sadly only an hour from his almost 4 hour set but still hits the vibe of the night right on the head!
For the past two Decade's, Slam have come to define Techno in Scotland. Pushing the sound since the 1980's as DJ's then moving on to production work in the early 90's, The duo comprising of Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle have travelled all over the world scorching dance floors and leaving fans wanting more. Not only have they performed dynamic sets at leading festivals and events globally they have played at some of the worlds best clubs to boot. If that wasn't enough, They also hold residencies at three of the UK's best clubs. "Pressure" and the "Sub club" in their hometown of Glasgow and "Fabric" in London. Not content with releasing only their music such as classics "Positive Education and "Life Times", Slam have also cultivated many other artists on Soma records, (Now in it's 21st year) such as Daft punk and Gary Beck. With their Paragraph label they combine their love and production talents to release both House and Techno gems and with "Alliances" work on collaborations with some of todays most forward thinking producers. With having remixed everyone from Daft Punk to Underworld. Releasing a steady flow of monster tracks on their own and far to many other labels to count. Producing a mix podcast (Slam Radio) and being nominated as the "Greatest dance act of all time" poll in the UK dance music magazine MixMag in 2011, These past few years have been the most prolific for the "Guys from Glasgow" and it looks like they are set to rock on for another twenty years to come!

This set was recorded around a time when were recording two or three nights a week, Some nights it would be going to clubs and then to raves. Unfortunately with nights like these sometimes the parties tend to blend together after awhile. As far as I know, This was another set that we recorded that has never been released until now. I was personally looking forward to meeting Slam this night as I was and still I'm a huge fan of their music and mixes. I believe this event was held at the Belmont Armory on the north side of Chicago for an "up for it" crowd. The thing about the promoter and this show was that they did some parties with only a few artists and had them play extended sets. With this show there were four DJ's on the bill. Slam, New York's "DJ Keoki", L.A.'s "DJ Hyperactive" and at the time San Diego "Miles Maeda" each did two hour sets this night. This was billed as Slams first time in the states and for sure their first time playing in Chicago. Now some have said that with their return this year In January to Chicago makes it ten years since they have played here but I think this might have been last time they stopped in town. The thing that I remember the most was talking to Stuart and Orde before their set about music production and traveling and thinking the whole time that these guys were way down to earth and willing to talk to anyone and everyone. I'm happy that it worked out that I was finally able to post this set on our blog and have it be ahead of their return to Chicago. I hope you all enjoy it as much as the crowd did that night and I have over all these years!
This post comes to us by the “North Woods Shaolin” himself, DJ Jes One. Originally from the northern suburbs of Chicago but now based in Mellen Wisconsin, Jes One has been in the House scene now for over 20 years. With humble beginnings in 1989, Jes One has spun at Nightclubs, festivals, and raves all over the U.S. and has appeared on various underground and commercial radio mix shows during that time. He was also owner of the “Groove Shop” record store in Rockford Illinois but has since moved on to the "Groove Shop North" in Mellen Wisconsin. Jes One was so well known for his style of turntablism by layering vocals over House, Techno tracks and scratching that he was featured in ad campaigns for Shure record needles around the time this set was recorded. Along with DJing, Jes One has also released tracks alongside such artists as Frankie Bones, Josh The Funky 1, Alex Peace, Paul Anthony, and Woody McBride to name a few and countless mix cds. Since his move, Jes One has been involved with “First Mellen Group” organizing events and club nights for the past few years around Wisconsin
This set was recorded at during Shure’s “Future sound of Chicago” event at the now closed “Red No. 5” club in Chicago. I had just met Jes One a few weeks prior to recording this set at a time when I was jumping from club to club recording shows. Jes One had told me about this show and that he wanted me to come out and record the night. Shure had done a few “Future sound of” shows at a few different clubs that show cased up and coming artists and let then take control of the night with them all being the headliner. This mix displays the true skill of Jes One’s mixing with great presence and flow by going from grooving house and vocal cuts to banging Tech-House. Be sure to click on his link under the artist’s links area to get more info on what he’s got going on and when you can catch him live in a city near you.
This Classic set comes to us by a man who many has called the "DJ's DJ" at a venue that has long been torn down in Chicago. Derrick Carter has been known to be part of the "Second wave" of artists that came out of Chicago in the mid 90's but has actually been involved with House music since the mid 80's, had his first record released in 1987 and remix duties dating back to 1991. He has produced under a number of names such as DJ Bang, Innocent and Tone Theory. Along with being involved with groups such as Symbols and Instruments, Sound Patrol, Little Green men, Music for Freaks and ran both the Blue Cucaracha and Classic record labels the later with co head Luke Solomun.
This set was recorded at Shelter night club when Friday's were "Material" night's and Derrick along with fellow Chicago jocks Josh Werner, Scott Song, Diz, J Dub and DJ Heather were your residents with hosts DJ Colette and Eric. I believe Shelter had been open for 10 years before it closed it's door's in 1998 and I was able to enjoy the last two years and the last Saturday night there. I don't remember if I was at this night but this set captures the spirit of a city at the time when the "Second wave" of Chicago producers and artists were making there mark on house music. Derrick closed out the night on this set going from classic Chicago house, Some current cuts from the time and a cheeky track of the Benny Hill theme show all mixed with Derrick's flair. As far as I know, There hasn't been many sets from Shelter released so I'm very glad to be able to share this one with you from a Chicago Icon and super cool guy. Be sure to click on Derricks link under the artist's links area to catch up with him the next time he's playing in a city near you.
This post is by Chicago's own DJ Hyperactive. You could not have been involved in the rave scene in the 90's without knowing who Hyperactive was. I don't think anyone else has spun at or had their voice call over the crowd at more Mid-west shows then he did. Who hadn't blasted his popular "Sounds of the underground" mix tape seres (Vol 4. was my favorite) on the way to a party then or now! With releases on DropBass, Missile and his own Contact records, Hyperactive has played along side or opened up for almost every big name that came to town then. This night Hyperactive was opening up for Lenny Dee so he pulled out all of the stops.(Who by the way was making his first appearance in Chicago) I was given this set by a friend of a friend and choose to start with this because it's the set that shows how I remember him best. Spotlighting his new tracks before they came out and working the crowd on the mic. ATP, The promoter's of this rave, Were known for some unique venues and this night was no exception. Held in school gymnasium, The turntable's were above the sound system on the second floor and you can hear Hyperactive point that out at the end of this set. As far as I know this set or any other from this night has ever been out. I believe this set includes tracks from Hyperactives first release on DropBass network as well as other classic bombs for that time.
This classic mix tape comes to us by one of House Music's most well known and loved DJ's, Mark Farina. Mark was an Chicago native and was involved in the rave and club scene of the early 90's before taking his trademark sound to San Fransisco. Prior to his current mix series "Mushroom Jazz" which will be at number 7 soon, there were a series of mix tapes that gave us his bled of soul full, jazz and house. "Bliznobia" was one of those tapes that with others from that time had Farina tuning in his sound that 16 years later we would still be enjoyed by fans. I'm not sure but it's safe to say that Bliznobia" came out sometime in 1993. I was given this tape to convert to mp3 by a friend and after doing a quick search online I didn't see it up anywhere so I decided to post it on the blog. Being that it was on a 90 min tape, I did my best to clean up the mix and bring up the levels. This one is a classic for sure!
This post comes to us by Minneapolis's own DJ Apollo. Apollo has been DJing since the late 80's and producing since the early 90's under a number of aliases using "DJ Apollo" during the early rave years (1993-1998) and currently goes by Dirty McKenzie. He also was part of M.O.R.E. (Minneapolis Organization of Rave Enthusiasts) and was a staple in the party scene there. Unfortunately this will be the last set from "Atlantis" I'm going to post. Two record's into Apollo's set, Someone went on an rampage and did some damage to the venue and destroyed some of Optique Vid Tek's video equipment. The management at the Dolton expo turned on the lights and has us clean up the venue before we could continue the night. Apollo finished his set but 30 minutes into Chicago's DJ Fierce's set the Police shut down the party due to noise complaints from the residents around the venue. Also with all the chaos going on the recording's did not come out very clean. Apollo's set was right after Frankie Bones and weaves from Acid and Techno.
This post comes to us by the godfather of the U.S rave scene live from his first show in Chicago, Brooklyn New York’s own Frankie Bones. Co-Founder of New York’s Sonic Groove Records, Frankie’s career spans well over 20 years going back to the early Eighty’s. After years of DJ’ing, Frankie moved on to production with Tommy Musto as Musto & Bones and Lenny Dee as “Loony Tunes” and produced a string of hits both in the clubs and the underground. In 1989 he was brought out to England to play at the “Energy” rave to a crowd of over 5000 people and when he returned to New York put together "Atmosphere" on June 30Th, 1990 and kick started the rave culture in the U.S.
This night Chicago’s E-Clipse crew had Bones headline “Atlantis” with an hour and a half set of banging Techno, Acid and Drum & Bass. There are so many classic tracks on the set but one of my favorites is a banging remix of a Fat Boys track. Frankie gets on the mic from time to time to hype up the crowd and thank them for a great time at the end of his mix. This set was recorded over two cassette tapes so I had to do some editing to fill in the gaps. I also got a hold of some video from the night and will post some of it up in the future. Click on Frankie's link under the artist's links area to find out what he's up to and to catch this legend in a city near you.
This post comes to us by one of Wisconsin's original rave promoter's, Jedidiah the Messiah. Jedidiah was part of the highly successful Drop Bass Network and record label of the same name in Milwaukee. Along with Minneapolis's Hidden Disco Family Plan, Drop Bass's party's were some of the best shows and event's that I have ever been to north of Chicago. They were known for incredible line-ups and unique venues during the Rave scene of the 90's. One show that comes to mind was their "ONE" year anniversary event in 1993. Held in an horse barn, There were 5 DJ's booked with each spinning two different sets for the night. Drop Bass were also known to host Massive New year's eve party's one of which I was able to attend and still stands as one of my most memorable eve's to this day (Teenage Wasteland, 1997) Drop Bass also organized event's with other promoters like ATP and Ripe productions here in Chicago. Last but certainly not least was their "Further" camp out events. I was at the very first one in 1994 in which they showed the Mid-West how to do an Electronic music festival while camping and got to experience it myself. I'm not sure if this was his first but it might have been one of his earliest sets in Chicago. This set has been transferred from two cassette tapes and with that I had to do some editing to keep the flow of the mix together. Once again yours truly had the Mic to introduce Jedidiah right after Mark Verbos's live P.A. This mix has Classic tracks by Thomas Heckman, Steve Poindexter and Acrid Abeyance's Remix of Plank's - Acid War. He doesn't have a website but here's his contact info if you would like to get a hold of him for a show. (jedidiah@pwscreative.com)
This post is an live P.A. by Mark Verbos at "Atlantis" from 1994. Sadly this was the last party held by Chicago promoters E-Clipse but there were also a few firsts this night. "Atlantis" was the first rave held at the widely used Dolton Expo Center in the southern suburbs of the city. This was also Brooklyn Techno icon's DJ Frankie Bones first time playing in Chicago. Finally this set is or was one of Marks firsts in Chicago. Original from Milwaukee now based in New York, Mark Started off playing at raves in 1993 and went on to work as an engineer at an recording studio in Chicago before moving to Berlin in 2000. Mark has had numerous releases on labels such as Milwaukee's Drop Bass Network, Hollands Djax- Upbeats and his own Simple Answer imprint. Mark has worked as an engineer or as an co-producer with other artist's most of whom have been with Tommie Sunshine to which they have produced more than 50 remixes and several EPs together. These sets are one of a few that were recorded onto cassette tape's and never converted till now. I was one of the MC's for the night and after the show I was given copies of the night. Chicago's DJ Tron (R.I.P.) opened the night but his set didn't get recorded. This night Mark brought his trademark all analog, Acid show to the party. Marks sets have always been straight to the point Acid and this night is no different of that. This set is almost a hour long and banging the whole way through. If any one has pic's from this night please feel free to post on the Facebook fanpage.
This Classic mix tape come to us by Chicago House head Davey Dave from sometime between 1993 and 1994. Dave was another Chicago DJ that I didn't find much info online about but had an rich history in the early rave scene in Chicago. This mix tape was given to me by the same friend who gave the blog James Johnson's "Krunch" mix tape. As with James mix, This tape is not posted on another site so I decided to post it on mine. I remember Dave playing party's in the early to mid 90's with most of his spots being in the second room at raves or as the end of night house DJ on the main room lineup. I believe Dave was part of the House Preservation Society crew along with Mystic Bill. This mix shows the diverse style of Dave's music and flows from Progressive, Tribal, soul full and vocal House. Unfortunately the tape didn't have an case or I would have posted an Pic of it with the blog.
This post features some of the Set's from the second room at the "Direct Drive" rave in Chicago in 1997. This room gave people a break from the harder sound that was in the main room by some of Chicago's finest. There is one set on the tapes that we are not 100 percent sure if it is who we think it is. The tape was marked Kurt Eckes from Drop Bass Network but the set is all house and I don't ever remember him playing House. Chicago's Shelter club resident, DJ Jeff Starlight was also on the bill for the night and that is our best guess to who it might be. All the DJ's had around one hour time slots but with the Datman recording both rooms this night (The main room sets are also on this blog, Check the archive list) some of this room's sets are not complete or didn't get recorded. I'm not going to post Brian G's mix because only 25 minutes of his set got recorded or Track Head Steve's mix because he pushed the mixer in the red through his whole mix and the recording was very distorted in some parts. It's been so long but I believe that Roy Buck did his live P.A. in this room but that didn't get recorded either.
